Project 365 ~ Day 232

Just After Sunrise.

The sky was really pretty this morning as the clouds broke up and the sun began to peek out...

Project 365 ~ Day 231

Preserved Until Spring.

There isn't much around in January, but there is plenty of ice.

Project 365 ~ Day 230

Strange New Universe.

Macro of the ice on my front porch, with enhanced midtones to give some colour. I think it looks like the topography on a map...

Project 365 ~ Day 229

Wise Eyes.

Fall back picture - I tried to get star trails, but the wind was blowing so much I couldn't keep the tripod still! A shame because the sky was amazing and it was a new moon... Oh well. I do like Yoda's expression - and his eyes sparkle in a really cool way...

Project 365 ~ Day 228

Hangin' Out.

The weather was back to gray and bleak today, so I was back to finding things around the office to shoot.

Project 365 ~ Day 227

Lengthening Shadows.

With these short winter days, it doesn't take long at all for the shadows to seem like giants.

Project 365 ~ Day 226

"This is my good side..."

"Just ignore the french fry bits in my beak..." The ravens are bold, and allowed me to walk right up to them today. Too busy eating french fries to worry about what I was doing... This guy was huge - when he stretched up his head was even with the headlight of the truck next to him!

Project 365 ~ Day 225

Leftovers.

It's funny how much holiday candy has turned up at my office the past couple of weeks. New years resolutions and chocolate don't always mix...

Project 365 ~ Day 224

Mountains Out of Molehills.

By the power of my macro lens, I turned tiny quartz chips into huge boulders! To give you some perspective, the giant slab of silver in the background is a dime...

Project 365 ~ Day 223

Midnight Sun.

The sudden warming of the temperature caused a strange fog to envelop the neighborhood after nightfall. The bright globe is the streetlight, and the eerie lighting was more like Halloween than January...

Project 365 ~ Day 222

Lingering Poinsettia.

January is a really bleak month in northern BC. Everything is white, grey, and black. Even the occasional blue sky isn't enough to ward off the doldrums. I went around the office this afternoon hoping against hope that someone had flowers in their office - anything colourful that I could shoot. I found this last lingering poinsettia plant in the waiting room - it was the most colour that I could find (that was alive, at least...)

"I'm about to bark!..."

Cricket has found her voice - and it's very loud!! How such a small dog can make such a big noise is one of the mysteries of life...

Project 365 ~ Day 220

First Waning Gibbous of 2010.

The moon is on a cycle right now where it doesn't rise in my area until about 3am. I took this just after 8am, before dawn.

Luck, Joy, and Transformation.

The frog represents all three - a fitting symbol for the new year...

Project 365 ~ Day 218

Winter Field.

Mid day and bright sun. But cold! A temp inversion held down the fog from all the furnaces in town, making it look as if my sleepy little town was full of smog! No - a perk of living in small town Canada is all the fresh air...

and more snow, and more snow, and more snow. Just another January in the north...

Project 365 ~ December 2009 Mosiac

Days 184 - 214 of my first Project 365. I LOVE how the month begins and ends with a full moon. The Blue Moon (or 2nd full moon in a calendar month) happens every 2.7 years. The last time the Blue Moon was on New Year's Eve was in 1990!

Project 365 ~ Day 214

Blue Moon.

Wow - tonight is a triple threat! Full moon, blue moon, and new year's eve!

Happy New Year!

Project 365 ~ Day 213

Winter Sun.

I took this photo at 1:42pm. Look how low the sun was in the sky. That's winter in the north - about 6 hours of daylight on this date. But since the winter solstice we've been gaining 7 minutes of daylight a day. By summer solstice the sun will rise a 3 am and not set until after midnight.

Just Before Dawn.

This display is in front of City Hall in my little town. I love that the season is noted with a natural scene of trees and deer.

I took this shot this morning on the way to work - 8:45am and not quite dawn.

Hangin' Out.

Ares has taken to writhing like a porn star when he's on his cat tree and I pull out the camera. This was the only shot I got without motion blur...

365 ~ Day 199

Study in Black and White.

I loved the colour of the sky today, and how the trees stood out against the snow. It was warmer today, up to -16C, gray and hazy. A hazy shade of winter...

Project 365 ~ Day 198

Hoar Frost.

It was so cold that the heat from the furnaces in town created an ice fog, which, in turn, left all the vegetation covered in hoar frost.

Ice fog is a unique and bizarre experience - imagine moving through a fog so thick you can't see 10 feet in front of you. However, the fog is recreated and worsened with every heat source. The exhaust from the vehicle in front of you blinds you - especially when moving foward from a stop sign or light.

It's just weird. The joys of the north...

Frozen.

On Sunday the high temp was -43C, and was over -50C with wind chill. Too insanely cold to do anything but watch football on tv. The ice crystals on the livingroom windowpane were beautiful, though...

Project 365 ~ Day 195

Noon Shadows.

This time of year the sun is so low in the sky the shadow at noon seems like late afternoon. Also notice the snow - that first branch is actually a foot and a half above the ground...

Growing Family!

We met the newest member of our family today. She is yet unnamed, and is a 6 week old purebred mini dachshund. She will come to join the brood right around Christmas. We wanted another hound, but as I get older I've been drawn more and more to smaller dogs that I can easily exercise, etc. She is the tiniest hound!

Finally Full.

The moon is full tonight and the sky is clear. The air is cold (-14C at 6:30pm) and the stars are shining. It is truly a beautiful night.
