Project 365 ~ Day 121

Here it comes!...

I knew it was coming - and today it arrived. The first snowfall of the season. Wet and messy and dark, and it will be gone tomorrow. But today - groans and moans and commiserating about life in the north.

Autumn Reds.

Up here in northern BC we don't have the amazing fall colours that they do back east. Most trees are evergreens or poplars, so the leaves (if they turn at all) turn yellow, then brown, then disappear. There are very few reds, so I find them where I can...

Project 365 ~ Day 119

Autumn.

Is here, with winter snapping at her heals. Snow is predicted before the end of the week, so it was nice to get out on a sunny afternoon and admire the leaves...

Sunlight in the Clouds.

The weather changed suddenly at mid day, and really dark clouds rolled in. I really thought it was going to snow! But it only rained a bit. However, as the clouds came in the suns rays were coming through them in a really beautiful way. My exposure was off as you can see, but I caught them anyway.

What the other guy was thinking...

During the famous Obi-Wan scene - you know - "These are not the droids you're looking for..." The guy in the back could only think to himself:

"Damn, this saddle chafes!..."

Fading...

Last week it was part of a beautiful bouquet. Today it's fading fast - edges browning as it dries and wilts. But it's age and looming demise can't erase it's beauty.

There's a lesson in that...

I'm not sure what Argo was looking at, but she was looking!

On Target.

Pride of the Star Wars Miniature collection, the AT-AT is to scale and stands 14" tall. Quite a sight when set out with the other models...

Depth of Field.

This is a net-type aparatus on the playground at the local middle school. I was practicing DOF.

Project 365 ~ Day 111

Between the Lines.

All that's left to do is for the baler to sweep up the hay and package it in either impossible to move 6'x5' round bales, or easier to move 3.5'x2' square bales (that aren't really square...)

The pattern on the ground is mesmorizing.

Project 365 ~ Day 110

Still Useful.

Everything seemed to come together as I photographed this old barn - the light was good, the sky and clouds were interesting, and the barn itself was a beautiful deep red bringing out the reds in the grass. I liked the photos so much that I had trouble deciding which one to use for my picture of the day.

The trees are shedding...

These pine cones all came from the jack pine in my front yard. They are really small, averaging the size of a large marble or a ping pong ball. I picked up a basket full to use in seasonal arrangements, but my cat kept trying to carry them off! So all that's left of my centrepiece is this photo...

Nothin' Left But Fluff.

I got a backup DSLR today!!!! ::happy, happy dance:: My 50D is still in the shop, but a friend traded me her old 20D for a lens, and I ran and grabbed my macro lens immediately. There were a few dandelions left in the back yard, and I took shots to my heart's content. I love how this one came out.

::sigh:: I love a DSLR. The little Panasonic P&S just proved to me how much...

Road to Nowhere.

Just liked the look of this muddy track through a strip of woods opening out into a field... Feels like late, lingering summer.

Against All Odds.

This morning I noticed a wildflower outside the back door to my office. When I came back out after work it was gone. I hope someone else noticed it and took it home...

Project 365 ~ Day 105

Lingering...

That would be summer - the season that is staying late to watch movies and have another drink. Not that we're complaining, mind you. It's just unusual - flowres still blooming half way through September.

In Remembrance.

My friend Yvette got a tattoo today in memory of her little cousins who were killed last year in an auto accident. She asked me to come along and photograph the experience, which I was honoured to do.

Golden Afternoon.

I love the light in the late afternoon. (Of course, so does every photographer! LOL) The sky was clear and deep blue, and the clouds were very cool. This farmland is right outside Dawson Creek.

Circulation.

The leaves are beginning to turn, so Iwas glad to get a cool shot of a healthy green leaf on September 10. We've been know to have snow by this time!

September.

The warmer summer has resulted in a longer harvest season. In this field the hay has been cut and is awaiting the baler. Photo taken just outside Dawson Creek on the southeast end of town.

Driftwood.

I love the look and feel of aged driftwood. This piece came from Dinosaur Lake outside Hudson Hope, BC, and now lives on my patio.

Changing Colour...

These are some of the few leaves that turn red in my part of the country. Because we have have so many poplar trees, the fall colour is overwhelmingly yellow. So I love to focus on the red when I can.

The Mob.

"Now that we have him, what do we do with him?"
"You dummy - why do you think I brought my bowl?"
"...oh..."

A Change in the Weather...

My mom always called these "buttermink clouds" and said they indicated a change in the weather. Well, she was right! The morning dawned sunny and hot, but at noon I looked up to see these covering the sky above me. By 7pm the lightening turned night into day, and the mother of all thunderstorms hit overhead about 9pm. The loudest, most violent storm all year - the kind that had me unplugging the computer and tv, and waiting for the lights to go out.

This morning dawned cool and the air was fresh - washed clean by the rain...

Project 365 ~ August Mosiac

Feels like August was a bit uneven - some great shots along with some real clunkers. I'm struck by the lack of colour overall - all the moon shots tended to make the month much less vivid. In looking at the month overall it's easy to see that some subjects took a leading role. But I tried to include scenes that felt like late summer - berries, crops, harvest, etc.

I'll keep all this in mind as I shoot September.

Project 365 ~ Day 94

Pink Ruffles.

It was a rainy day so I was on the lookout for some colour to photograph. This flowering kale formed the border on one of the flower beds at city hall. It was beautiful and strange, and I loved it! (I had to go back to the office and find out what it was - luckily some of my coworkers garden and could name it immediately.)

The smorg is still open...

I can't believe it's September 1 here in the north, and not only are the flowers still blooming, the bees are still around! I took this shot with my little Panasonic ultra zoom, and was pleased at how sharp it was. There was a little spider in the pic that I never noticed! But since I'm really scared of spiders, I had to crop it out....!

Tragedy!

That's my 50D in the box - headed to Mississauga to the Canon Canada repair centre. I started getting Error 30 a few weeks ago (shutter error) and it just kept getting worse and worse until the camera was erroring out every couple of shots. So I'll spend the next month using my little P&S (starting with this pic) and look forward to getting my baby back!
